The high quality and appeal of PartyLite candles continues a tradition set by a New England schoolteacher and entrepreneur, Mabel Baker. In 1905, Mabel began to make candles from the bayberries that naturally grew at Cape Cod. She gathered the bayberries and boiled them down in a workshop in her barn. The wax would float to the top to be skimmed, strained and refined by hand. This was a time consuming process because each bushel of berries yielded only 2 to 2.5 kg of scented wax. The wicks for these candles were made out of hand-braided cotton and the candles were hand-dipped in candle wax as many as thirty-five times. The spicy and aromatic bayberry candle is still a mainstay of the Partylite candles product line.

By 1910, the fame of her candles reached Boston and one of the largest stores there purchased her entire supply of candles that year. Over time, her hobby grew into a reputable business and flourished for years under the business name of Colonial Candles of Cape Cod. In 1973, this company pioneered Partylite candles and the idea of bringing candle light into people's homes through the use of personal party consultants. Blythe Inc. has owned the company since 1990.

Mabel Baker’s bayberry candles were so successful that the Partylite Candle Company didn’t even consider adding a second scent, Scent-O-Pine, until 1925. Today, the Partylite company Mabel Baker's tradition of quality with a product line that features over 400 candles and accessories each year. Popular products at PartyLite candles are the Three-Wick Candle which is a large pillar candle that boast three flames and comes in such gorgeous scents as cranberry, ginger currant and honey dew. They also offer pillar candles in scents such as raspberry and café latte and votive candles in such exotic “flavors” as Belgian Waffle, Birthday Cake, Black Cherry and of course, that old stand-by …bayberry.
