The most traditional candles you can purchase, oil candles are often considered more sophisticated or elegant than their jar-based relatives. While that’s debatable depending upon your personal preference, oil candles are often more pungent and scent saturated than jar candles. Why? Jar candles are composed of oils combined with wax. When the wax burns, it triggers the oil to release its scent.

Oil candles, on the other hand, are composed almost entirely of that fragrant oil. Because it’s not diluted by wax, the scent of the oil carries more impact. Oil candles were once the sole source of light in pioneering days and first came into use as oil lamps. Since then, candle accessories and the popularity of decorative candles themselves has increased the popularity of oil candles.

Besides their long-lasting fragrance, oil lamps often appeal to people because of their beautiful sophistication. Delicate sculptured glass containers can be composed and used for oil candles since their burning substance is liquid. Many oil candles feature colored oil that can be custom-mixed to match color schemes or décor.

Other creative applications for oil candles using candle accessories include suspending a rose blossom, orchid bloom, or other beautiful flower in the oil. The flower is preserved naturally and looks very elegant when placed on a bookshelf or table. Decorative wick holders can also be used in many different metals, and candle snuffers are more necessary with oil candles than with jar candles.

Many different candle accessories are available exclusively for use with oil candles, and the majority of them are well-crafted while being inexpensive smaller pieces. While jar candles are more country, oil candles and their accessories are slightly more upscale without carrying a heavy price tag.

As a relatively inexpensive piece, oil candles are a wonderful decorating option when on a budget. They serve as conversation pieces, room brighteners, and, at times, air fresheners. Oil candles are very versatile and make wonderful gifts for anyone, but especially for the home decorator.
