How to Make Gel Candles
Gel candles are colorful multicolored sheer candles that are manufactured
from specially processed mineral oils and copolymers. Gel candles
are known for their clear, rubbery textures and burn twice as long
as paraffin candles. Although they are dripless candles, they are
not freestanding like pillar candles or taper candles. The gel and
wick must be installed in glass jars or small candle holders such
as the ones used to hold votive candles.
Creating gel candles in your own home is just as easy as creating
candles from candle wax, however it is
important to remember that the gel can be volatile especially when
burned with certain materials and fragrances. Always read the manufacturers
instructions to familiarize yourself with temperatures and substances
that are compatible with your brand of gel.
All that you need to create gel candles is the gel, which is sold
in most craft stores, a pot to heat the gel in, wicks, a glass container
for the gel candle and a metal spoon. You may also add dye, scent
and objects such as charms or shell that can be embedded in the
gel.
Any kind of glass container is suitable to make gel candles but
the rule of thumb is the thicker the glass wall the better. Zinc
core wicks or wax coated wicks are to be used to make gel candles.
Do not use paper wicks, which can create a fire.
If you are imbedding objects in your gel candles, your first step
is to deposit these objects into your glass container. You can suspend
the objects using thread that is knotted so that it is removed easily
later.
Melt the candle gel to the desired temperatures, add scent and color
and pour into the glass containers you have chosen for your gel
candles. Use a metal spoon to aid you in this process as the gel
can melt wooden or plastic ones. Save any leftover gel in a plastic
bag as it can be reused.
You are now ready to bask in the soft glow of the candle light created
by your own gel candles.
