Types of Candle Molds

Learning how to make candles is all the rage in arts and crafts circle so hobbyists now have a large selection of candle molds to choose from when they shop at the craft store for supplies.

Candle molds are available as part of a candle making kit or you can purchase them individual candle molds. These vessels are manufactured from a variety of different materials, but experts agree that metal, rubber and plastic are by far the best choices for candle molds.

There are four basic kinds of molds: metal candle molds, peel back candle molds, pop out molds and plastic candle molds.

Metal molds are mainly used for making block shaped candles and usually create a candle with a smooth finish and minimal detail. These candle molds are durable and last for years.

Peel back molds and pop out candle molds are a more recent invention and are available in a variety of shapes: fruit, animals, stars, balls and holiday motifs. This type of candle mold creates a smooth candle with no patterns or texture.

Pop-out back molds are made of molded rubber. After the candle wax has hardened the resulting candle pops out of the mold through flexible slits. Peel back molds allow you to turn the candle mold inside out so that the candle pops out.

Plastic molds are used to make flat candles or shapes that are made from two pieces. A disadvantage of using plastic candle molds is that they tend to warp after a couple uses.

You do not have to purchase special molds or a candle making kit to create beautiful candles at home. Terracotta flowerpots, empty juice cartons, ice cream tubs and yogurt containers make great molds for square candles, pillar candles and votive candles. With a little imagination and inspiration you can create your own cheap candles without having to buy commercially made molds.
