A candle making kit from the days of my childhood turned
out to be a most heartwarming trip down memory lane. Cleaning up
the attic one fine sunny day, I chanced upon a trunk that seemed
unfamiliar at first. As I lifted the lid and went through the contents,
the memories began to emerge. But it was when I found the candle
kit right at the bottom beneath all the old clothes that the trickle
became a flood.
I was
transported back in time to a part of my life that I spent at our
little farmhouse, which was where I had got the candle kit on my
ninth birthday. The sunny fields of corn, the clucking of chickens
in the coop, the grunt of the pigs, the mooing, the chirping, braying,
there were so many sounds that filled out every day, as.
Thinking
about it now, it seems no less than a miracle that I was able to
experience all these rare joys through most of my growing years.
Now of course, I'm a thoroughbred city girl clambering up the corporate
ladder. But there was a time when this focused Art Director was
a little girl with no agenda fixed for the day, but to while the
hours away with her precious candle kit.
Aunt
Sally and Uncle Jo who lived in the city had gifted it to me. That
candle kit became my constant companion for much of my isolated
childhood. There weren't many children to play with in the neighboring
farms so I was by myself most of the time.
There
were candles of all shapes and sizes all over the house. In fact
this is my earliest memory of having used my imagination capturing
it in wax. No doubt, this same part of me is what emerges when designing
corporate logos of multi-million dollar firms. It is really the
candle kit I should thank for getting me a head start in life.
